Tri It For Life Chapter History - Charleston, SC
The idea for the Tri It For Life Charleston Chapter was founded in the winter of 2014. Two friends, Angi Klick and Kelly Greene, got together and decided they wanted to give women the opportunity to get started in the sport of triathlon. Angi had previously worked for a local triathlon based store and was familiar with TIFL in Charlotte. Together they persuaded Alyse Kelly-Jones to let them test out their idea. They started training with their recruited friends-some novices in the sport and some seasoned triathletes who served as mentors. The group followed the guidelines of TIFL for their “test” year and had a fantastic season training their first group of triathletes.
The spring of 2016 brought their first “official” season of TIFL Charleston with support from the board in Charlotte. They quickly reached capacity for signups and started with 35 mentors and 70 athletes. The group participated in their first triathlon at the inaugural She Tris Sprint Triathlon on June 2, 2016 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The following season they grew and had 45 mentors and 75 athletes. The community was quick to support their efforts both in sponsorship and event venues. They found a “home base” for swim training at The I’On Club. Participants are fortunate to train where She Tris Sprint Triathlon takes place. Biking and running locations vary in the beautiful picturesque landscape of the surrounding locations and beaches which makes the Charleston area ideal for TIFL.
